The Doggy Dilemma

AWARENESS BROCHURE

The Doggy Dilemma brochure explores the common health issues of purebred dog breeds caused by generations of inbreeding. By designing around the idea of this issue, I hoped to gain more knowledge about the various genetic diseases and health problems that certain dog breeds have. I also wanted this design to be able to inform those who are unaware of the negative health effects that inbreeding has. The layouts of my design are structured so that it is engaging for the reader to go through and learn about the different purebreds that are included in this brochure.

The process video below showcases the steps I took in designing a solution that would ultimately increase awareness of the health defects that inbreeding has. I began the process by simply brainstorming ideas and asking many questions about the issue at hand. By figuring out what kind of information I needed to learn, I would have a better understanding of designing a prototype that would be practical yet effective towards the targeted audience.

In my process, I had also received guidance from Prof. Albert, who at the time, taught Animal Science at the University of Illinois. Having her brainstorm and support my project ideas really allowed me to research effectively and analyze what pieces of presentable information would be most useful in the solution.

By utilizing a combination of illustration, imagery, and text, the information regarding the health defects can be effectively transmitted to the audience. In addition to raising awareness, one of the goals in this layout is to allow the reader to create an emotional connection towards these animals, which would then inspire some to take action, in their own ways, against the practice of inbreeding. Those methods could be simple, like adopting a mixed breed, or more complex, and protesting against larger organizations and events that strictly support purebreds.
